‘Tis the season for Christmas smoothie cheer. I can’t think of a better way to get into the spirit than a holiday classic transformed into a nutritious smoothie. That being said, we’re making eggnog, but not just any eggnog. Vegan Eggnog.
I can vividly remember having eggnog for the first time at my family’s Christmas party over 10 years ago. They were distributed in shot glasses (I’m pretty sure that there wasn’t any rum in it, but who knows). Nevertheless, I thought it was incredible and I just had to make a smoothie version of it.
My creamy vegan Eggnog Smoothie recipe encompasses all of the flavor + consistency that you love in a eggnog minus the cream and the egg. Plus, unlike traditional eggnog recipes, this eggnog protein smoothie requires minutes to make. All you need is a high-speed blender and blend away.
So whether you’re lactose intolerant or following a plant based lifestyle, this vegan eggnog recipe will be a hit this holiday season.
Why You’ll Love This Smoothie
- Tastes like Eggnog: The flavor is that of authentic eggnog drink, but in a plant-based smoothie form.
- Loaded with Nutrition: This eggnog protein smoothie features over 25 grams of plant based protein, is packed with anti-inflammatory properties, & is loaded with healthy fats.
- Fully Customizable: Serve it hot or chilled, this vegan eggnog recipe is cozy either way.
Vegan Eggnog
Before we get blending, let’s discuss a bit about eggnog. The traditional eggnog is made with eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and rum (or bourbon). It’s super creamy, heavy, and a decadent Christmas drink.
My version is a little different, but just as tasty. It’s made with a blend of creamy coconut milk, raw cashews, vanilla plant protein, sweetened with fruits, and holiday spices. Best of all, this vegan eggnog recipe doesn’t make your belly feel like you just drank a gallon of cream.
Also, my vegan eggnog recipe can be served hot or cold – it’s truly delicious either way.

Ingredients
- Organic Full-Fat Unsweetened Coconut Milk: To replace the cream in traditional eggnog, we’ll be using full-fat unsweetened coconut milk. I highly recommend using full-fat unsweetened coconut milk and chilling it overnight so that your smoothie is cold!
- Organic Vanilla Plant Protein: Since it is a eggnog protein smoothie. Plus, adding a scoop of protein powder helps to keep you full and satisfied longer. I love Four Sigmatic’s Sweet Vanilla Plant Protein for this recipe. It’s made with real organic vanilla with no grains, gums or fillers. Oh & it’s super delicious. Nevertheless, if you have yet to try Four Sigmatic’s Sweet Vanilla Plant Protein, add your favorite vanilla plant protein.
- Organic Ground Flax Seeds: Organic ground flax seeds adds a great little boost of fiber & minerals to this smoothie.
- Organic Raw Cashews: Cashews provide the most creamy consistency to make this eggnog recipe super rich. Simply soak the cashews to soften then blend!
- Organic Spices: A combination of ceylon cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves are used to achieve the perfect blend of eggnog spice.
- Sea Salt: A healthy pinch of sea salt is rich in a ton of minerals and beautifully enhances the flavor of this Eggnog Smoothie recipe.
- Organic Medjool Date: Adding just one date to this holiday smoothie adds the perfect amount of sweetness.
- Organic Frozen Banana: To make the smoothie extra thick & creamy, it’s best to use a frozen banana.
- Ice Cubes: Completely optional, just in case you need to make your eggnog smoothie colder.

Tips for Making the Perfect Eggnog Smoothie
Interested in how to make the absolute perfect smoothie? As someone who makes smoothies daily, here are my TOP tips for creating the perfect smoothies:
- Soak Cashews: Be sure to soak your organic raw cashews in hot water for about 10 minutes to soften. This ensures that your sauce gets smooth & creamy.
- Use Frozen Fruit: Adding a frozen to this smoothie is the only way to go! The ice from the frozen fruits adds thickness to the smoothie.
- Soak Medjool Date: If your dates aren’t soft, you will need to soak your pitted dates in very warm water for 5 minutes. This will help them soften up, so that they can blend nicely.
- Adjust Liquid Amount: If you find that your smoothie is too thick to blend, not to worry! Just add a bit more milk, blend, open the cover, scrape down the sides if needed, and blend again. And when possible, always use a larger high-speed blender instead, as it will blend the ingredients much better.
- How To Make: Add your liquid first & blend your powders first, then the medjool date, before adding your frozen ingredients. This is my personal favorite way of preparing my smoothies. By blending the liquid & powders first, it ensures that your powders blend completely.
- Smoothie Blending Tip: Start your blender on low to medium speed. If you blend the smoothie too quickly from the beginning, it’s really hard for the blender to properly blend the frozen ingredients – so start lower and then gradually increase the speed.
- Chill Your Glass: There’s nothing better than a cold smoothie, in this case, an eggnog milkshake. Put your serving glass in the fridge or freezer while you’re making your smoothie to ensure a chilled smoothie with every sip!
Healthy Breakfast Smoothie FAQ’s
Do I have to use a frozen banana?
The frozen banana in this recipe gives the smoothie a thick & creamy texture. If using a fresh banana, be sure to add a handful of ice cubes to achieve a cold, thick smoothie. However, if you’re looking to remove the banana altogether, because you’re allergic or simply don’t like them, you can replace it with ½ cup of frozen zucchini, frozen cauliflower, or frozen avocado chunks. If you elect to make this a banana free smoothie, I recommend keeping the medjool dates to maintain its sweetness.
Is it healthy to have a smoothie?
Even though this smoothie tastes like a chill glass of eggnog, it is full of nutritious ingredients. I wouldn’t post something that was unhealthy. Having a smoothie full of protein, healthy fats, & superfoods for a post workout breakfast is great because you’ll be getting essential vitamins, nutrients, & protein, first thing on the rise. However, some smoothies on the market or on the web can be loaded with tons of fruit, added sugar, & nonsense, making them a less healthy option.
Do I have to add organic raw cashews?
Even though cashews are one of the main components of this Christmas smoothie recipe, it is not mandatory. If you don’t have raw cashews, you can use 2 tbsp of organic raw cashew butter. If you don’t have either, I highly recommend swapping it for your preferred nut or seed butter. I think organic raw almond butter or organic sunflower seed butter would compliment this eggnog smoothie nicely.
What is the best protein powder to use?
For this particular Eggnog Smoothie recipe, I love using Four Sigmatic’s Sweet Vanilla Plant Protein. It’s made with real organic ingredients with no grains, gums, or fillers. If you don’t have Four Sigmatic’s Sweet Vanilla Plant Powder on hand, you can use your favorite vanilla protein powder. When selecting a plant protein, it’s crucial to look at the protein content and most importantly, the ingredients.
How can I add protein without using protein powder?
If you don’t have plant protein on hand, no worries! To increase the protein content, you can add a tablespoon of organic hemp seeds and/or organic chia seeds, without changing the taste too much.
Can I make this smoothie recipe in advance?
Yes! Feel free to make the smoothie as is or double it for later. Check out this “How to Prepare Smoothies in Advance” post to achieve the best results.
