Maca Powder Health Benefits
Besides the creamy plain coconut yogurt, one of the star ingredients that sets this chocolate protein smoothie recipe apart is organic gelatinized maca powder! If you’re new to this superfood, let me fill you in!
Maca is a Peruvian root vegetable known for its malty caramel flavor & impressive health benefits. It’s packed with essential minerals like copper, iron, magnesium, potassium, & iron. Traditionally, maca has been used to boost libido, ease menopause symptoms, & promote hormonal balance for both men & women.
When shopping for maca powder, you’ll find two varieties: raw & gelatinized. Raw maca isn’t heated, so it retains maximum enzymes & nutrients, but it can also be harder to digest. For this reason, I recommend organic gelatinized maca powder. Gelatinized maca is heated to separate the root’s starch, which slightly alters some nutrients, but it makes the powder easier to digest & absorb.
Maca is the perfect addition to this smoothie, adding both unique flavor & powerful health benefits. Note to self, a little organic gelatinized maca goes a long way, so start with a small amount & adjust to taste!

Ingredients
- Organic Unsweetened Non-Dairy Milk: Any non-dairy milk works in this recipe; just be sure to use homemade or trusted brands for the best quality. Some of my favorites include MALK Organics, Three Trees, & Native Forest.
- Organic Coconut Yogurt: Thick & tangy coconut yogurt adds some extra creaminess & probiotics to this chocolate protein smoothie. Use a plain, unsweetened variety, because the extra sugar isn’t needed. Need tips? - Organic Gelatinized Maca Powder: This superfood adds a subtle caramel-like flavor while supporting hormone balance, boosting libido, & easing menopause symptoms.
- Organic Ground Flax Seeds: A powerhouse of fiber & essential minerals, these tiny but mighty seeds add a great nutritious boost.
- Organic Cacao Powder: For that rich & decadent chocolate flavor, cacao powder is a must! To be clear, cacao powder is different from regular Dutch cocoa powder. Review this Cacao Powder 101 post to learn more!
- Organic Vanilla Plant Protein: A scoop of protein powder helps to keep you full & satisfied longer. When selecting a protein powder brand, it’s crucial to look at the protein content and, most importantly, the ingredients. - Sea Salt: A healthy pinch of sea salt is rich in a ton of minerals & beautifully enhances the flavor.
- Organic Frozen Banana: Adding a frozen banana gives the smoothie an ultra-thick, milkshake-like consistency that’s both creamy & naturally sweet.
How to Make
- Blend the Liquids & Powders. First, add the non-dairy milk, yogurt, maca, seeds, cacao powder, vanilla plant protein, & sea salt to a high-speed blender. Blend these ingredients until smooth.
- Blend the Frozen Banana. Next, add in the frozen banana. Blend until smooth & creamy. If needed, you can pause the blender, remove the lid, & scrape down the sides so that everything is fully incorporated. You may need to add a little more liquid depending on how thick/thin you like your smoothies.
- Serve. Pour into a chilled glass & enjoy!

Optional Smoothie Add-Ins
Make this smoothie your own! Here are some easy ways to customize & elevate Chocolate Maca Yogurt Smoothie:
- Organic Hemp Seeds: Include a tablespoon of hemp seeds to provide this blend with even more healthy fats, protein, omegas, & minerals.
- Organic Cacao Nibs: Add 1 tablespoon of organic cacao nibs at the last minute, then blend once more to give this smoothie lots of texture at every sip!
- Organic Cold Brew: Need a boost? Check out this Mocha Yogurt Protein Smoothie recipe.
- Organic Greens: Greens are packed with so many minerals, vitamins, & antioxidants. I recommend baby spinach if you’re new to green smoothies, but kale, Swiss chard, mustard greens, collard greens, or mixed greens all work.
Tips for Making the Perfect Smoothie
From my daily smoothie-making experience, here are my top tips for crafting the best Chocolate Maca Yogurt Smoothie:
- Use a Frozen Banana: The frozen banana adds natural sweetness & icy thickness, creating a creamy, milkshake-like consistency.
- Adjust Liquid Amount: If you find that your smoothie is too thick to blend, don’t worry! Just add a bit more liquid, blend, open the cover, scrape down the sides if needed, & blend again. When possible, always use a larger high-speed blender instead, as it will blend the ingredients much better.
- How to Make: Blend your liquids & powders first, before adding your frozen ingredients. This method ensures that your powders fully dissolve & blend smoothly.
- Smoothie Blending Tip: Start your blender on low to medium speed. Jumping straight to high makes it hard for the blender to properly mix the ingredients. Begin slowly, then gradually crank up the speed to achieve the smoothest consistency.
- Chill Your Glass: Pop your serving glass in the freezer while you blend to enjoy a milkshake-worthy experience!
Smoothie FAQs
Do I have to use a frozen banana?
The frozen banana gives this smoothie its thick, creamy texture and chilled, milkshake-like vibe. If you only have a fresh banana, just toss in a handful of ice to keep things cool. Not a fan of bananas or need to avoid them? No problem. You can swap it out for ½ cup of frozen organic zucchini, organic cauliflower, organic coconut meat, or organic avocado chunks. If you go banana-free, I suggest adding 1 organic pitted Medjool date to keep the smoothie naturally sweet & balanced!
Is it healthy to have a smoothie?
Absolutely! I wouldn’t be sharing it if it wasn’t. A smoothie packed with protein, healthy fats, & superfoods makes an amazing post-workout breakfast or meal. It’s a great way to fuel your body with essential vitamins, nutrients, & sustained energy. That said, not all smoothies are created equal—some store-bought or online recipes can be overloaded with fruit, added sugars, or unnecessary fillers, which can turn a good thing into…not-so-good. Stick with balanced, whole-food ingredients, & you’re good!
What is the best protein powder to use?
I used an organic vanilla plant protein powder for this Chocolate Maca Yogurt Smoothie recipe. When selecting a protein powder brand, it’s crucial to look at the protein content and, most importantly, the ingredients. Check out this Cleanest Plant-Based & Vegan Protein Powders post to learn what to look for, the best brands, & recommended daily protein intake.
How can I add protein without using protein powder?
No protein powder? No problem! You can still boost the protein content by adding a tablespoon of organic hemp seeds and/or a serving of organic raw almond butter. Both options blend in smoothly & won’t significantly change the taste—just add a little extra creaminess & nutrition.
Can I make this smoothie recipe in advance?
