Ingredients
- Organic Unsweetened Non-Dairy Milk: Any non-dairy milk works in this recipe, just be sure to use homemade or trusted brands – I like MALK Organics or Three Trees.
- Organic Seeds: A combination of organic ground flax seeds, organic chia seeds, & organic hemp seeds, provides this blend with even more healthy fats, omegas, minerals, fiber, & so much more!
- Organic Superfoods: Essential! More specifically, organic gelatinized maca powder, organic mesquite, organic lucuma powder, & organic tocotrienols. If you only have a few of these incredible superfoods on hand, use it, but if you don’t have any of these, this smoothie will still be incredible without them. Super confused on superfoods? - Organic Cacao Plant Protein & Organic Cacao Powder: Adding a scoop of protein powder helps to keep you full and satisfied longer. I love Four Sigmatic’s Creamy Cacao Plant Protein for this blend. It’s super delicious & is made with real unrefined cacao with no grains, gums or fillers. In addition to the cacao plant protein, we’ll be adding a little cacao powder. To be clear, cacao powder is different from regular dutch cocoa powder. Cacao powder is pure, raw cacao versus processed. Check out this Cacao Powder 101 post to learn more!
- Organic Raw Coconut Butter: Raw coconut butter adds healthy fats that keep you full, energized, & focused. It’s naturally a little sweet, but has no added oils, no added sugars, & no added salt! Just pure coconut — YUM!
- Manuka Honey: To provide this superfood smoothie with a hint of sweetness.
- Sea Salt: A healthy pinch of sea salt is rich in a ton of minerals and beautifully enhances the flavor.
- Organic Medjool Date: AKA natures candy & is the perfect addition to this creamy cacao smoothie.
- Organic Frozen Banana: It’s best to use a frozen banana to create that super thick & creamy texture.
- Organic Cacao Nibs: Cacao nibs gives this smoothie lots of texture, with a little crunch at every sip. OBSESSED.
How To Make
- Blend the Liquids & Powders. First, add the non-dairy milk, seeds, cacao powder, plant protein, coconut butter, manuka honey, sea salt, & superfoods, to a high-speed blender. Blend these ingredients until smooth.
- Blend the Medjool Date. Add the soft medjool date to the blender & blend until smooth.
- Blend the Frozen Ingredients. Next, add in the frozen banana. Blend until smooth and creamy. If needed, you can pause the blender, remove the lid, & scrape down the sides so that everything is fully incorporated. You may need to add a little more liquid depending on how thick/thin you like your smoothies.
- Blend the Cacao Nibs. Add the cacao nibs. Blend for 20 seconds on medium.
- Serve. Pour into a chilled glass & enjoy!
Optional Smoothie Add-Ins
Feel free to truly make this blend your own! Here are a few suggestions to amp-up this Creamy Cacao Superfood Protein Smoothie recipe:
- Organic Coconut Yogurt: Add some creaminess to this cacao smoothie recipe with a scoop of coconut yogurt. You may have to reduce the liquid to ¾ cup.
- Organic Cold Brew: Need a boost? Use half organic unsweetened non-dairy milk & half cold brew, to turn this into a creamy mocha superfood smoothie. YUM!
- Organic Greens: You can get your greens in this smoothie too. They blend easily & you can’t taste them. Plus, greens are packed with so many minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants. Spinach, kale, swiss chard, mustard greens, collard greens, or mixed greens all work.
Tips for Making the Perfect Smoothie
Interested in how to make the absolute perfect Creamy Cacao Superfood Protein Smoothie recipe? As someone who makes smoothies daily, here are my TOP tips:
- Use Frozen Fruit: Adding a frozen to this smoothie is the only way to go! The ice from the frozen banana adds thickness to the smoothie.
- Soak Medjool Date: If your date isn’t soft, you will need to soak your pitted date in very warm water for 5 minutes. This will help it soften up, so that it can blend nicely.
- Adjust Liquid Amount: If you find that your smoothie is too thick to blend, not to worry! Just add a bit more liquid, blend, open the cover, scrape down the sides if needed, & blend again. And when possible, always use a larger high-speed blender instead, as it will blend the ingredients much better.
- How To Make: Add your liquid first & blend your powders first, then the medjool date, before adding your frozen ingredients. This is my personal favorite way of preparing my smoothies. By blending the liquid & powders first, it ensures that your powders blend completely.
- Smoothie Blending Tip: Start your blender on low to medium speed. If you blend the smoothie too quickly from the beginning, it’s really hard for the blender to properly blend the frozen ingredients – so start lower and then gradually increase the speed.
- Blend Cacao Nibs Last: The reason for adding the cacao nibs last, is because you don’t want them to get as creamy like the smoothie – you want them to retain their structure, for texture. That makes this smoothie a bit crunchy, which I love!
- Chill Your Glass: Put your serving glass in the fridge or freezer while you’re making your blend to ensure a chilled drink with every sip.
Smoothie FAQ’s
Do I have to use a frozen banana?
The frozen banana in this recipe gives the smoothie a thick & creamy texture. If using a fresh banana, be sure to add a handful of ice cubes to achieve a cold, thick drink. However, if you’re looking to remove the banana altogether, because you’re allergic or simply don’t like them, you can replace it with ½ cup of frozen zucchini, frozen cauliflower, or frozen avocado chunks. If you elect to make this a banana-free smoothie, I recommend keeping the organic medjool date to maintain its sweetness.
Is it healthy to have a smoothie?
Duh! I wouldn’t post something that was unhealthy. Having a smoothie full of protein, healthy fats, & superfoods, for a post workout breakfast is great because you’ll be getting essential vitamins, nutrients, & protein, first thing. However, some smoothies on the market or on the web can be loaded with tons of fruit, added sugar, & nonsense, making them a less healthy option.
What is the best protein powder to use?
For this particular healthy superfood smoothie recipe, I love using Four Sigmatic’s Creamy Cacao Plant Protein. It’s made with real organic ingredients with no grains, gums, or fillers. If you don’t have Four Sigmatic’s Creamy Cacao Plant Protein on hand, you can use your favorite cacao protein powder. When selecting a plant protein, it’s crucial to look at the protein content and most importantly, the ingredients.
How can I add protein without using protein powder?
If you don’t have cacao protein powder on hand, you can use a total of 2 tbsp of organic cacao powder. To increase the protein content, you can add a tablespoon or two of almond butter, without changing the taste too much.
Do I have to add superfoods?
Even though this is a Creamy Cacao Superfood Protein Smoothie recipe, you are not required to add them. However, I do recommend looking into them, as there are incredible benefits of consuming them on a regular basis. And if you only have a couple of superfood powders, that’s great! Use what you’ve got for this smoothie recipe. For additional superfood information, be sure to check out this superfood post!
