A cozy chai latte in a creamy smoothie form. This Vanilla Chai Protein Smoothie recipe is packed with plant protein, healthy fats, superfoods, & warming spices. It’s the perfect post workout breakfast to refuel your body!

Okay you guys, have you ever incorporated chai into your protein smoothies? If not, what have you been waiting for? Probably this recipe. Lol.
But in all smoothie seriousness, this chai smoothie recipe combination is the best. It’s made with almond butter, seeds, chai, maca powder, and frozen banana.
The star of this protein smoothie is the chai obviously. For this chai smoothie, I specifically used Four Sigmatic’s Chai Latte packet. May I just say, this is not a sponsored post by Four Sigmatic, I’m just sharing what I use. Four Sigmatic is all about transparency – every product that they create is safe and effective, as well as backed by research. I also designated a brief section of the post a few paragraphs down about the benefits of this specific chai.
The vanilla protein smoothie recipe is so special. The combination of spices and creaminess transpires the coziest smoothie recipe ever. It’s unique in the sense that it’s a smoothie that is both cold & warming at the same time.
While this is a chai smoothie recipe, you can certainly use a fresh banana to winterize it. Heck, you can even completely omit the banana and keep the remaining ingredients to warm it up on the stove. I won’t judge!
So whether you’re sip this smoothie warm or hot, I know you’ll love it!
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- Perfect Protein Smoothie: Whether you’re making it post workout or breakfast, this chai smoothie recipe is packed with over 25 grams of plant protein.
- Loaded with Chai Flavor: Tastes like a chai latte, but in a cozy smoothie form.
- Coffee Shop Worthy: The flavor & texture in this smoothie is that found at a coffee shop, but at a fraction of the cost.
Chai Health Benefits & Nutrition
The hero of this vanilla protein smoothie recipe is the chai. If you’re unfamiliar with chai, let me fill you in real quick. Chai tea is a traditional Indian milky tea that is made from a combination of black tea, ginger, and other warming spices. It’s a sweet, yet spicy tea that provides a variety of health benefits. The variation of benefits will differ, based on the sourcing and that’s why I use Four Sigmatic’s Chai Latte. It’s full of warming chai spices, no caffeine, and no dairy too. Through incorporating this specific chai packet in the smoothie, some of the incredible benefits include:
- Relief of Mild Stress & Promote Relaxation: Thanks to the adaptogens, like reishi and turkey tail, Four Sgimatic’s Chai Latte, helps you adapt to those everyday stressors.
- Mental Clarity: The adaptogenic blend helps keep your mind calm, to feel more centered throughout your day.
- Sustainable Sourced to Achieve All the Benefits: You don’t need to worry about anything funky in your mushrooms with Four Sigmatic. It’s certified organic, as well as tested for mycotoxins, molds, and pesticides.
- Tastes Good: Just because it’s loaded with mushrooms, doesn’t mean the taste has to be compromised. It’s super delicious!

Ingredients
- Four Sigmatic’s Chai Latte with Reishi and Turkey Tail: The star of this smoothie. I love Four Sigmatic’s Chai Latte packet because it’s creamy, uncaffeinated, and spicy-sweet (but not too sweet). Oh & my favorite part is that this organic chai latte supports your digestive system + it’s paired with reishi, which creates a calming blend to support stress & overall well-being. It’s the perfect addition for this chai protein smoothie.
- Organic Unsweetened Almond Milk: Any non-dairy milk works incredible in this recipe, but I love almond milk! Just be sure to use trusted brands – I like MALK Organics or Three Trees.
- Organic Raw Almond Butter: Almond butter adds plant-based healthy fats, protein, & some extra nutty creaminess. Don’t skip this!
- Organic Hemp Seeds: Add in a tablespoon of organic hemp seeds for a boost of healthy fats, protein, omegas & minerals.
- Organic Ground Flax Seeds: Organic ground flax seeds add a great little boost of fiber & minerals to this smoothie.
- Organic Maca Powder: Maca adds a subtle caramel like flavor to this smoothie. Plus, it’s packed with antioxidants & has been shown to have helpful benefits for women’s hormones.
- Organic Vanilla Plant Protein: Adding a scoop of protein powder helps to keep you full and satisfied longer. I love Truvani Organic Vanilla Plant Based Protein Powder for this recipe. It’s made with no preservatives, no artificial colors, & no artificial sweeteners. Oh & it’s super delicious. Nevertheless, if you have yet to try Truvani Organic Vanilla Plant Based Protein Powder you’re missing out, but you can add your favorite vanilla plant protein.
- Sea Salt: A healthy pinch of sea salt is rich in a ton of minerals and beautifully enhances the flavor of this chai smoothie.
- Organic Frozen Banana: It only takes one fruit to sweeten up this vanilla protein smoothie recipe. It’s best to use a frozen banana to create that super thick & creamy texture.
How To Make
- Make the Chai: To a high-speed blender, add a ¾ cup of chilled water with one Four Sigmatic’s Chai Latte with Reishi and Turkey Tail packet. Blend until frothy.

Smoothie Add-Ins
Feel free to truly make this smoothie your own! Here are a few suggestions to amp-up this chai smoothie recipe:
- Organic Chia Seeds: Chia seeds add omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, selenium, phosphorus, calcium, etc. + it helps thicken this chai smoothie.
- Organic Coconut Yogurt: Add some creaminess to this smoothie with a scoop of coconut yogurt. You may have to reduce the water to ½ cup in this smoothie when adding yogurt.
- Organic Medjool Date: If you’re wanting to sweeten your smoothie even more, start by adding one pitted Medjool Date. You may have to reduce the liquid to a ½ cup.
- Organic Greens: You can get your greens in too in this protein smoothie. They blend easily & you can’t taste them. Plus, greens are packed with so many minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants. Spinach, kale, swiss chard, mustard greens, collard greens, or mixed greens all work. WARNING: it will change the color of the smoothie!
Smoothie Tips
Interested in how to make the absolute perfect vanilla protein smoothie recipes? As someone who makes smoothies daily, here are my TOP tips:
- Use Frozen Fruit: Adding a frozen to this smoothie is the only way to go! The ice from the frozen fruits adds thickness to the smoothie.
- Adjust Liquid Amount: If you find that your smoothie is too thick to blend, not to worry! Just add a bit more milk, blend, open the cover, scrape down the sides if needed, and blend again. And when possible, always use a larger high-speed blender instead, as it will blend the ingredients much better.
- How To Make: Blend your chai first, then the remaining liquid & blend your powders next, before adding your frozen ingredients. This is my personal favorite way of preparing my smoothies. By blending the liquid & powders first, it ensures that your powders blend completely.
- Smoothie Blending Tip: Start your blender on low to medium speed. If you blend the smoothie too quickly from the beginning, it’s really hard for the blender to properly blend the frozen ingredients – so start lower and then gradually increase the speed.
- Chill Your Glass: There’s nothing better than a cold smoothie, in this case, a chai latte milkshake. Put your serving glass in the fridge or freezer while you’re making your smoothie to ensure a chilled smoothie with every sip!
Smoothie FAQ’s
Do I have to use a frozen banana?
The frozen banana in this recipe gives the smoothie a thick & creamy texture. If using a fresh banana, be to add a handful of ice cubes to achieve a cold, thick smoothie. However, if you’re looking to remove the banana altogether, because you’re allergic or simply don’t like them, you can replace it with ½ cup of frozen zucchini, frozen cauliflower, or even frozen avocado chunks. If you elect to make this a banana free smoothie, I recommend adding a bit of manuka honey or one organic pitted medjool date to maintain the smoothies sweetness.
Is it healthy to have a smoothie?
Duh! I wouldn’t post something that was unhealthy. Having a smoothie full of protein, healthy fats, & superfoods for a post workout breakfast is great because you’ll be getting essential vitamins, nutrients, & protein, first thing. However, some smoothies on the market or on the web can be loaded with tons of fruit, added sugar, & nonsense, making them a less healthy option.
What is the best protein powder to use?
For this particular vanilla protein smoothie recipe, I love using Truvani’s Organic Vanilla Plant Based Protein Powder. It’s made with no preservatives, no artificial colors, & no artificial sweeteners. If you don’t have Truvani’s Protein on hand, you can use your favorite vanilla protein powder. However, when selecting a plant protein, it’s crucial to look at the protein content and most importantly, the ingredients.
How can I add protein without using protein powder?
If you don’t have protein powder on hand, no worries! To increase the protein content, you can add a tablespoon of organic chia seeds, without changing the taste too much.
What if I don’t have Four Sigmatic’s Chai Latte with Reishi and Turkey Tail?
Not a problem! Just swap with your favorite chai or even make your own chai spice blend of ⅛ tsp organic ground ginger, ¼ organic cardamom, ¼ tsp organic ceylon, ⅛ tsp organic cloves, ⅛ tsp organic nutmeg. However, I highly recommend looking into Four Sigmatic’s brand, since quality matters!
Can I make this protein smoothie into a chai smoothie bowl?
Absolutely! Simply decrease the liquid to a ¼ – ⅓ cup! You’ll definitely need a high-speed blender, along with a plunger when transforming it to a chai smoothie bowl.
