If you know me, you know I appreciate a good smoothie. In fact, I make one everyday.
Over the years, I have created several smoothies and have learned several things along the way, so I thought it would be helpful to do a smoothie post dedicated to my smoothie do’s and don’ts.
Are smoothies healthy?
To kick this smoothie guide off, I wanted to first dive into if smoothies are even healthy, given the fact that this a health & wellness blog.
While the majority of smoothies are great, not all are made equal. In fact a lot of smoothies on the market or on the web can be loaded with tons of fruit, added sugar, & nonsense, making them a less healthy option.
A lot of people believe that loading the blender with several fruits + some protein is the perfect protein smoothie recipe. But that couldn’t be further from the truth.
When your smoothie ratio is more sugar (fruit) & less protein, healthy fats, and/or greens, you’re actually causing a huge insulin spike in your body and setting yourself up for a day of fat storage because of this.
When making a smoothie, make it a protein smoothie with a focus on the protein. I’m talking 30 grams minimum!
So, it’s crucial to use the right combination & amount of ingredients, so that you don’t make these crucial smoothie mistakes.
Smoothie Do’s & Don’ts
Below are some do’s & don’ts of making a balanced smoothie that will fuel your body, balance your blood sugar, & get your day started in a healthy way.
- Do add boosters such as chia seeds, hemp hearts, superfood powders, cacao powder, clean plant protein, & other adaptogens.
- Don’t add too much fruit!
- Do add at least 30 grams of plant protein to every smoothie
- Don’t add too much sugar or low nutritional quality add-ins.
- Do use a good quality organic unsweetened non-dairy milk. Be careful with the ingredients of nut milks, because some are full gums & other ingredients you don’t want. I recommend the brands MALK or Three Trees.
- Don’t use fruit juice or sweetened non-dairy milk. It’s way too much sugar + will give you the spike & crash feeling.
- Do use a good quality protein powder.
- Don’t use a protein powder full of sugar, fillers, gums & other ingredients you can’t pronounce.
