Protein Smoothie vs. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup
This Pumpkin Peanut Butter Cup Smoothie is a deliciously healthy spin on the classic Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup.
I haven’t touched the candy bar in over 10 years—and here’s why: when you check the label, you’ll find ingredients like soy lecithin, citric acid, heaps of sugar, & other additives that just don’t belong in a wholesome treat. Simply put, it’s not the healthiest choice for anyone, regardless of age.
Now, I’m not here to judge—everyone’s free to enjoy what they want! But personally, I prefer to seek out or create healthier alternatives that still deliver on indulgence. This smoothie is exactly that: all the creamy, chocolatey, peanut buttery flavor you love, with none of the junk. It’s indulgence without the guilt & a much better way to satisfy those sweet cravings.

Ingredients
- Organic Unsweetened Non-Dairy Milk: Any non-dairy milk will work, but for a creamy, clean smoothie, I recommend homemade options or trusted brands like MALK Organics, Three Trees, or Native Forest. They keep things simple—no added sugars or weird additives.
- Organic Coconut Yogurt: Thick & tangy coconut yogurt adds a creamy texture & gut-healthy probiotics. Go for a plain, unsweetened variety—the smoothie is sweet enough on its own. Need tips? Check out this Coconut Yogurt 101 post for tips, brands, & everything you need to know about the dairy-free alternative.
- Organic Pumpkin Puree: Be sure to grab pure pumpkin puree, not pumpkin pie filling, which is loaded with sugar & unnecessary extras. My go-to is Farmers Market Foods—super clean!
- Organic Unsalted Peanut Butter: I prefer organic unsalted peanut butter for a pure, natural flavor. Crunchy peanut butter works too if you want some texture. Feel free to swap in your favorite nut or seed butter.
- Organic Ground Flax Seeds: These little seeds add fiber, minerals, & healthy fats that help keep you full & satisfied. Plus, they blend right in—no weird texture.
- Organic Cacao Powder: Loaded with antioxidants, cacao powder adds a rich, deep chocolate flavor while giving your smoothie a healthy boost. (If you want to know the difference between cacao powder & Dutch-processed cocoa, check out my Cacao Powder 101 post).
- Organic Vanilla Plant Protein: A scoop of vanilla protein adds staying power & a little sweetness. Look for one with clean ingredients & solid protein content. Not sure what to buy? I break it all down in my Cleanest Plant-Based & Vegan Protein Powders post.
- Organic Pumpkin Spice: A healthy pinch of pumpkin spice brings all the cozy fall vibes together. You can also add Ceylon cinnamon or a dash of nutmeg if you’re feeling extra festive.
- Sea Salt: Just a small pinch brings out the flavors & adds essential trace minerals. Don’t skip it—it makes a difference!
- Organic Frozen Banana: Adds natural sweetness & that thick, creamy texture we all want in a smoothie. Frozen is key for that milkshake-like feel.
How to Make
- Blend the Liquids & Powders. Start by adding the non-dairy milk, coconut yogurt, pumpkin puree, nut butter, ground flax seeds, cacao powder, plant-based protein, & spices to a high-speed blender. Blend until everything is smooth & well combined.
- Blend the Frozen Ingredients. Next, toss in the frozen banana & blend again until creamy & smooth. If needed, pause to scrape down the sides of the blender to make sure everything mixes evenly. Add a little more liquid if you prefer a thinner smoothie.
- Serve. Pour into a chilled glass & enjoy!

Smoothie Add-Ins
Feel free to customize this Pumpkin Peanut Butter Cup Smoothie to fit your taste & needs! Here are some tasty ideas to take it to the next level:
- Organic Cacao Nibs: Add 1 tablespoon of organic cacao nibs at the last minute, then blend once more to give this smoothie lots of texture at every sip!
- Organic Cold Brew: Need an energy kick? Swap half of the non-dairy milk with cold brew coffee for a subtle caffeine boost & extra depth.
- Organic Greens: Packed with vitamins, minerals, & antioxidants, greens are a simple way to level up your smoothie’s nutrition. Baby spinach is great for beginners, but kale, Swiss chard, mustard greens, collards, or mixed greens all blend beautifully.
Tips for Making the Perfect Smoothie
If you want to make the absolute best pumpkin protein smoothie (& I make smoothies daily!), here are my go-to tips:
- Use Frozen Banana: Frozen banana is a total game-changer! It adds natural thickness & keeps your smoothie cold without watering it down.
- Adjust the Liquid: If your smoothie feels too thick or tough to blend, don’t stress—just add a little more liquid, blend again, & scrape down the sides. Using a big, high-speed blender really helps get that creamy & smooth texture.
- Blend Liquids & Powders First: I like to add all the liquids & powders first, blend those, & then toss in the frozen ingredients. This helps everything mix evenly & prevents clumps.
- Start Blending Slowly: Begin blending on low or medium speed. Starting too fast can overwhelm your blender & make it harder to break down frozen fruit. Gradually ramp up the speed for the smoothest & creamiest results.
- Chill Your Glass: For the ultimate refreshing experience, pop your serving glass in the freezer while you prep your smoothie. Nothing beats sipping a cold & creamy Pumpkin Peanut Butter Cup Smoothie!
Smoothie FAQs
Do I have to use a frozen banana?
Using a frozen banana in this smoothie recipe helps achieve that thick, creamy texture everyone loves. If you only have fresh bananas on hand, no worries! Simply add a handful of ice cubes to keep your smoothie cold.
If you want to skip bananas altogether—whether due to allergies or personal preference—try swapping in ½ cup of frozen organic zucchini, organic cauliflower, or my favorite, organic avocado chunks. These healthy alternatives provide creamy texture & flavor without the banana taste. Just be sure to add a natural sweetener like one organic pitted Medjool date or about 2 teaspoons of honey to keep your smoothie naturally sweet & delicious.
Is it healthy to have a smoothie?
Yes—especially when it’s made with wholesome, nutrient-dense ingredients like this Pumpkin Peanut Butter Cup Smoothie! It tastes indulgent, like pumpkin pie filling, but is actually packed with protein, healthy fats, & superfoods, making it a fantastic post-workout recovery or morning energy boost.
That said, not all smoothies are created equal. Some store-bought or commercial smoothies can be loaded with excess fruit sugars, added sweeteners, & fillers that offer little nutritional value. The key to a healthy smoothie is choosing balanced, whole-food ingredients that fuel your body without unnecessary extras. This recipe hits that sweet spot perfectly!
What is the best protein powder to use?
I used an organic vanilla plant protein powder for this Pumpkin Peanut Butter Cup Smoothie recipe. When selecting a protein powder brand, it’s crucial to look at the protein content and, most importantly, the ingredients. Check out this Cleanest Plant-Based & Vegan Protein Powders post to learn what to look for, the best brands, & recommended daily protein intake.
How can I add protein without using protein powder?
If you don’t have protein powder on hand, no worries! To increase the protein content, you can add a tablespoon of organic hemp seeds without changing the taste that much.
Can I make this smoothie recipe in advance?
Totally! You can prepare this fall smoothie recipe as is—or double the batch to enjoy later. For tips on storing & prepping smoothies ahead of time to keep them fresh & delicious, check out my How to Prepare Smoothies in Advance post.
