If you’re obsessed with Mexican food and love eating healthy, you’re in the right place, because this post is going to share with you some nutritious, but tasty swaps to elevate your fiesta evening.
Ever since I was little, I have loved the cuisine. I like to believe it’s because my mom craved & ate a lot of Mexican food while she was pregnant with me. Pretty sure that’s one reason, but probably not the only reason.
As a result, I have Mexican food every Friday. Also known as “Fiesta Friday” in my house…aka my 718 square foot apartment. And as a “health-nut” I have tested & tasted several healthy swaps, so I had to share!
Healthy Mexican Food Swaps
Organic Cauliflower Rice
Even though cauliflower rice isn’t technically rice, it looks like rice and with the right additions, it can really elevate the flavors. You can find pre-made organic frozen cauliflower rice at your local health foods store.
Cassava Flour Chips & Tortillas
A healthy & delicious alternative to chips & tortillas is to swap the flour or corn based items for cassava flour. Cassava flour is a grain-free & gluten-free alternative to the regular, but it’s just as tasty, if not better. The chips are smooth & crisp, as the tortillas are soft & fluffy. My favorite brand is Siete Foods – they’re a family owned company that is non-gmo & use avocado oil in all of their products!
Homemade Salsa or Pico de Gallo
I know it’s easier to grab salsa off the shelf or pre-made pico, it’s just easy to whip up at home. Not only that, but the flavors and texture are on point, while being fully customizable. So if you’re wanting to kick up the heat throw in a jalapeño.
Homemade Guacamole
Just like salsa or pico, homemade guacamole is so easy to mash-up! Simply add your favorites like chopped red onion, fresh cilantro, squeezed lime juice, & sea salt, to a mixing bowl and mash (I prefer mine on the chunky side)! Again, it’s totally customizable!
Organic Cashew Queso
Queso is always a must & cashew queso is super cheesy + creamy without the dairy! Blending up cashew queso at home is so effortless and it’s even better than the original. Plus, adding a pinch of chipotle powder or even an organic jalapeño, is also available to those who like things spicy!
Organic Cashew Sour Cream
Sour cream is probably my favorite addition to any burrito bowl. It’s creamy, tangy, & the perfect consistency. Even if you’re not a dairy-filled sour cream lover, the cashew version is one that you have dollop onto your Mexican dish!
