This tasty, bright blue smoothie is a wonderful combination of naturally sweet whole food ingredients that work together to mask the somewhat funky taste of spirulina powder. You might be wondering at this point… What is spirulina?
Spirulina or spirulina powder is made from a natural blue green algae & used mainly as a dietary supplement for humans (and even animals).
Why You’ll Love This Fruity Blue Spirulina Smoothie Bowl

- Perfect breakfast that is sweet, energizing, and healthy.

- Plus, you can customize this smoothie bowl recipe, by adding your favorite toppings.
Fruity Blue Spirulina Smoothie Bowl Ingredients
This blue spirulina smoothie is creamy and perfectly sweet, so it actually tastes like you’re indulging into sorbet ice cream. Here are the ingredients you’ll need:
- Organic Frozen Banana: A frozen banana adds more sweetness and creaminess to this smoothie bowl!
- Organic Frozen Strawberries: Strawberries provide sweetness and complement this smoothie perfectly. They are loaded with antioxidants, fiber, and contain vitamin C, potassium, manganese, and vitamin B9.
- Organic Frozen Orange: Oranges are also packed with vitamin C. For this recipe, it’s best to use a frozen orange. This helps to create a thick smoothie consistency that holds up various toppings. Oranges have a high water content, so using the fresh variety will create a thinner smoothie and the toppings will sink through it.
- Organic Apple: Adding an apple to this smoothie adds an extra sweetness to it. Use your favorite! I used Red Delicious for this smoothie bowl.
- Organic Cashew Butter: Add a touch of creaminess & healthy fat with a some cashew butter. Creamy peanut butter or almond butter works too, but cashew butter tastes so much better in this!
- Organic Blue Spirulina Powder:As the name suggests, blue spirulina powder gives this smoothie its blue appearance. Spirulina is high in iron, copper, several B vitamins, and powerful antioxidants.
- Organic Unsweetened Non-Dairy Milk: You only need a little liquid to blend, since it’s a smoothie bowl. I used organic full-fat unsweetened coconut milk, but you can use any non-dairy milk that you enjoy.
- Organic Ground Flax Seeds: Loaded with nutrients, high in omega-3 fats, rich in dietary fiber, and you can’t even taste them. They are completely optional, so no problem if you don’t have them…yet!
How to make this Blue Spirulina Smoothie Bowl
All it takes is 3 simple steps to achieve your spirulina smoothie!
- Add: To begin, add the non-dairy milk, ground flax seeds, cashew butter, blue spirulina powder, frozen banana, frozen strawberries, frozen orange, and frozen apple, in a high-speed blender.
- Blend: Starting on a low speed, use a tamper to help ingredients blend. Pausing & scraping down sides of the blender as needed. If necessary, add additional non-dairy milk in 1/4 cup increments, until a thick, smooth texture is achieved.
- Serve: Then, transfer your creamy smoothie to a chilled bowl. Garnish with with coconut cashew granola, fresh strawberries, and extra cashew butter, if desired.

Best Smoothie Bowl Toppings
Don’t forget the toppings! I kept this spirulina smoothie bowl quite simple. I garnished mine with coconut cashew granola, fresh strawberries, and extra cashew butter on top. However, you can totally customize your smoothie bowl toppings with whatever you desire! Here are some more topping ideas that pair great with this smoothie bowl:
- Fresh Organic Berries: strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, cherries, etc.

Tips for Making the Perfect Smoothie Bowl
To make the perfect smoothie bowl, make sure to follow these tips!
- Use a frozen banana and frozen cauliflower to achieve a thick consistency.
- Start with a little liquid as possible, and add more only as needed. You can always add more, but once you add too much, you can’t go back! Pausing in between blending to scrape down sides helps as well.
- Use a high-speed blender, with a tamper, to ensure that your smoothie bowl achieves a thick and creamy texture.
- Place your serving bowl in the freezer before you begin preparing this recipe and remove it when smoothie is ready. This will ensure that your smoothie bowl stays cold as you enjoy it.
Fresh versus Frozen Ingredients
The key to making smoothie bowls is using frozen ingredients. By adding frozen ingredients to your smoothie, you will achieve a thicker result, so that you can add toppings, without them sinking. I usually start with a little non-dairy milk and add more, if needed, until I reach the desired thickness.
