Chai Health Benefits
One of the key ingredients in this chocolate date shake is the Vanilla Chai Plant-Based Protein from Truvani. Made with 11 simple, organic ingredients, it’s packed with protein & perfectly spiced. If you have a bag on hand, great—it adds a creamy, flavorful boost. If not, no worries! You can easily swap with a scoop of organic vanilla plant-based protein & a homemade chai spice blend (I’ve included it in the recipe card below).
Whether you have the bag of protein or not, chai offers several health benefits due to its blend of bold, warming spices. When crafting your own chai mix, quality is essential. I highly recommend using organic spices to ensure you’re getting all the goodness of flavor & nutritional perks in every sip.

Ingredients
- Organic Unsweetened Non-Dairy Milk: Any non-dairy milk works in this recipe; just be sure to use homemade or trusted brands—I like MALK Organics, Three Trees, or Native Forest.
- Organic Ground Flax Seeds: Organic ground flax seeds add a great little boost of fiber & minerals.
- Organic Cacao Powder: It’s the perfect addition to make this healthy protein shake chocolatey! To be clear, cacao powder is different from regular Dutch-processed cocoa powder. Want to learn more? Review this Cacao Powder 101 post!
- Truvani’s Vanilla Chai Plant-Based Protein: A scoop of this protein powder adds just the right touch of warm chai spices & vanilla flavor, while also helping you feel fuller, longer. If you don’t have a bag on hand, you can easily swap with a scoop of vanilla plant-based protein & a homemade chai spice blend (I’ve included it in the recipe card below).
- Sea Salt: A healthy pinch of sea salt is rich in a ton of minerals & beautifully enhances the flavor.
- Organic Medjool Dates: Medjool dates are a great source of fiber & minerals, while also providing a caramel-like sweetness. I recommend buying pitted dates so you don’t have to remove the pits yourself. My favorite brand is Joolies—they’re sweet, soft, & always superb!
- Ice Cubes: If you want a chilled chai shake, toss some in!
How to Make
- Blend the Liquids & Powders. First, add the non-dairy milk, seeds, cacao powder, Truvani’s Vanilla Chai Plant-Based Protein, & sea salt to a high-speed blender. Blend these ingredients until smooth.
- Blend the Medjool Dates. Add the soft Medjool dates to the blender & blend until smooth.
- Blend the Frozen Ingredients. Next, add the ice cubes & blend until smooth. If needed, you can pause the blender, remove the lid, & scrape down the sides so that everything is fully incorporated. You may need to add a little more liquid depending on how thick/thin you like your shakes.
- Serve. Pour into a chilled glass & enjoy!

Optional Shake Add-Ins
Make this blend your own! Here are a few tasty additions to take your Chocolate Chai Date Shake up a notch & boost its nutrition:
- Organic Hemp Seeds: Include a tablespoon of hemp seeds to provide this blend with even more healthy fats, protein, omegas, & minerals.
- Organic Cacao Nibs: Add 1 tablespoon of organic cacao nibs at the last minute, then blend once more to give this shake lots of texture at every sip!
- Organic Greens: Greens are packed with so many minerals, vitamins, & antioxidants. I recommend baby spinach if you’re new to green shakes, but kale, Swiss chard, mustard greens, collard greens, or mixed greens all work.
Tips for Making the Perfect Shake
As someone who makes shakes daily, I’ve learned a few tips to transpire the best shake every time. These insights will help you create a shake that’s smooth & satisfying!
- Soak the Medjool Dates: If your dates feel a tad hard, soak them in very warm water for 5 minutes to soften up.
- Adjust Liquid Amount: If you find that your shake is too thick to blend, don’t worry! Just add a bit more liquid, blend, open the cover, scrape down the sides if needed, & blend again. When possible, always use a larger high-speed blender instead, as it will blend the ingredients much better.
- How to Make: Add your liquid first & blend your powders first, then the Medjool dates, before adding your frozen ingredients. This is my favorite way of preparing my shakes. Blending the liquid & powders first ensures that your powders blend completely.
- Shake Blending Tip: Start your blender on low to medium speed. Jumping straight to high makes it hard for the blender to properly mix the ingredients. Begin slowly, then gradually crank up the speed to achieve the smoothest shake.
- Chill Your Glass: There’s nothing better than a cold shake, in this case, a chocolate chai milkshake! Put your serving glass in the fridge or freezer while you’re making your blend to ensure a chilled shake at every sip.
Shake FAQs
Is it healthy to have a shake?
Duh! I wouldn’t post something that was unhealthy. Having a shake full of protein, healthy fats, & superfoods for a post-workout breakfast is great because you’ll be getting essential vitamins, nutrients, & protein first thing. However, some shakes on the market or on the web can be loaded with tons of fruit, added sugar & nonsense, making them a less healthy option.
What is the best protein powder to use?
I used Truvani’s Vanilla Chai Plant-Based Protein for this chocolate date shake recipe. It adds just the right touch of warm chai spices & vanilla flavor, while also helping you feel fuller, longer. If you don’t have a bag on hand, you can easily swap with a scoop of organic vanilla plant-based protein & a homemade chai spice blend (I’ve included it in the recipe card below).
In general, when selecting a protein powder brand, it’s crucial to look at the protein content and, most importantly, the ingredients. Check out my Cleanest Plant-Based & Vegan Protein Powders post to learn what to look for, top brand recommendations, & guidance on your daily protein needs.
How can I add protein without using protein powder?
If you don’t have protein powder on hand, no worries! To increase the protein content, you can add a tablespoon of organic hemp seeds and/or a tablespoon or two of organic raw almond butter without changing the taste that much.
Can I make this shake recipe in advance?
Yes! Feel free to make this Chocolate Chai Date Shake recipe as is or double it for later. To achieve the best results, check out this How to Prepare Smoothies in Advance post.
