Chipotle Black Bean Soup is a warming bowl that is loaded with spicy flavor. It’s a one-pot vegan soup recipe that includes canned ingredients, along with a few fresh components. This 30 minute dinner is an easy weeknight meal that the whole family will love!

I don’t know where you’re at, but it’s currently getting super chilly here in Oklahoma. With that, this Chipotle Black Bean Soup recipe is the perfect dish to whip up. It’s a big bowl of subtle heat and only requires 30 minutes to make.
Created with hearty black beans, spicy chipotle powder, and the secret ingredient…organic cacao powder. I know this might sound foreign, but trust me. The rich cacao provides additional flavor, while balancing the heat to tie all of the spices together.
But we don’t stop there. After the soup is done cooking, the option to blend half of the soup is available. Although this step is optional, it truly takes this spicy soup recipe to the next level. But don’t get too blender crazy, because you’ll end up with pureed soup. Just a few light pulses with your immersion blender and you’re good.
Although this is a spicy black bean soup recipe, don’t let that redirect you. Since we’re adding the cacao powder, it truly does balance out the flavors. However, if spicy is not your thing, simply reduce the organic chipotle powder or replace it with regular organic chili powder. Either way the soup will be delish!
So put those cans of black beans to use and cozy up to this spicy black bean soup.
Why You’ll Love This Soup Recipe
- Quick & Easy: It’s a one-pot vegan soup recipe that comes together in 30 minutes & requires one-pot.
- Full of Spice: Loaded with chipotle powder to make this vegan soup recipe spicy.
- The Perfect Cozy Meal: A super spicy, rich, & comforting recipe that everyone will love during the colder months.
- Great for Meal Prep: This vegan soup stores well in the fridge, making it a perfect recipe to meal prep for quick dinners throughout the week.

Ingredients
- Organic Black Beans: The beans are the staple for this Chipotle Black Bean Soup and they’re full of healthy fats + plant-based protein. I used organic black beans, but you can certainly use organic red kidney beans or organic pinto beans
- Organic Onion: A staple for any soup! I used a medium yellow onion, but use what you have on hand!
- Organic Garlic: Make sure to use fresh garlic and not garlic powder. This ingredient is crucial to build flavor.
- Organic Low-Sodium Vegetable Broth: Any broth truly works and even water, if you’re in a pinch!
- Organic Spices: Chipotle chili powder, ground cumin, cacao powder, sea salt, and black pepper, are the spices used to season this vegan spicy soup.
- Organic Avocado Oil: Avocado oil is my go-to cooking oil, because it’s neutral in flavor & it can be used to cook at high-heat temperatures. If you don’t have avocado oil, just add a splash of filtered water or vegetable broth while cooking the vegetables.
- Organic Avocado: For topping of course! Dice it, slice it, or mash it. I personally like to dice it and chill the avocado in the fridge, because the chilled avocado will cool the hot soup down.
- Organic Cilantro: Fresh cilantro adds brightness & that authentic Mexican flavor that you can’t beat!
How To Make
- Sauté the Onion & Garlic. In a large pot, heat the avocado oil on medium-high heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic and let cook for 2 – 3 minutes.
- Stir in the Spices. Add in the spices and cook for 2 – 3 more minutes. If the pot is drying out, add a splash of water.
- Add Beans & Broth. Add the beans and broth. Bring to a light boil, string everything together.
- Cook. Reduce the heat to medium-low and let cook for 15 minutes uncovered, stirring every so often.
- Blend. For extra-thick soup, pulse with an immersion blender the pot a couple times. You can also remove a few scoops of soup, and add it to a high-speed blender. Blend until smooth then pour back into the pot and mix together.
- Serve. Serve over a bed of cauliflower rice, along with some diced avocado, fresh cilantro, or whatever you like. Enjoy!
Tips for Making this Soup Perfectly
- Organic Beans: I used organic black beans for this one-pot vegan soup recipe, but I think organic pinto beans would work!
- Organic Vegetables: Use your favorite type of onion – red, yellow, or white!
- Blending Soup: Although this step is completely optional, I highly recommend it. Blending about a third of the soup takes this spicy black bean soup to the next level. It creates the perfect amount of thickness and heartiness!
- Organic Chipotle Powder: If spicy is not your thing, simply reduce the organic chipotle powder or replace it with regular organic chili powder.
- Organic Toppings: Don’t forget them! Top with your favorites. I love cooked cauliflower rice, chilled diced avocado, and fresh cilantro!
Storing & Reheating
As mentioned above, this recipe is perfect for leftovers & meal prep! Just be sure to let the spicy black bean soup cool completely before transferring to an air-tight glass container.
Fridge Storage. Transfer soup to an air-tight glass container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
Freezer Storage. For longer storage, you can store it in the freezer, in a freezer-safe glass container for up to 2 months. If freezing, make sure to thaw in the fridge overnight before reheating.
Reheating. To reheat, simply transfer the soup to a large pot on the stovetop over medium heat, adding a little extra water or broth as needed until warm. Alternatively, place in a microwave-safe bowl to reheat in the microwave.
