Superfood Smoothie vs. Butterfinger Candy Bar
This superfood smoothie recipe is a healthy, protein-packed spin on the classic Butterfinger candy bar. Honestly, I haven’t touched a Butterfinger in over 10 years because of the ingredients. If you look at the label, you’ll see soy lecithin, vegetable oils, corn syrup, loads of sugar, & a bunch of other things that definitely don’t scream “healthy.” It’s not really the best choice for anyone, no matter your age.
That’s why I created this nutritious, better-for-you candy bar inspired smoothie. And don’t worry—this smoothie nails the taste of the real thing, just in a delicious, drinkable form. Plus, no Butterfinger bars were harmed in the making of this recipe, just pure, wholesome goodness!

Ingredients
- Organic Liquids: A combination of organic unsweetened non-dairy milk & organic coconut water is the perfect duo to get things blended thoroughly while adding natural hydration & flavor without any sugars.
- Organic Ground Flax Seeds: Organic ground flax seeds add a great little boost of fiber & minerals.
- Organic Unsalted Peanut Butter: No Butterfinger smoothie would be complete without peanut butter! I used creamy organic unsalted peanut butter, but crunchy works great too.
- Organic Raw Brazil Nuts: Packed with fiber, protein, thiamine, copper, magnesium, & the top natural source of selenium, Brazil nuts are a nutritional star.
- Organic Cacao Powder: To make this blend chocolatey & to be clear, cacao powder is different from regular Dutch cocoa powder. Review this Cacao Powder 101 post for details!
- Organic Superfoods: More specifically, organic gelatinized maca powder, organic mesquite powder, organic lucuma powder, & organic tocotrienols. If you only have a few of these on hand, no worries—use what you have, & if you don’t have any, the smoothie will still be delicious without them. If you’re super confused about superfoods, review this Superfoods 101 post to learn about their amazing benefits.
- Organic Vanilla Plant Protein: Adding a scoop of protein powder helps to keep you full & satisfied longer. When selecting a protein powder brand, it’s crucial to look at the protein content and, most importantly, the ingredients. If you’re not sure where to start, check out this Cleanest Plant-Based & Vegan Protein Powders post to learn what to look for, the best brands, & how to calculate your daily protein intake based on your lifestyle & goals.
- Sea Salt: A healthy pinch of sea salt is rich in a ton of minerals & beautifully enhances the flavor.
- Organic Frozen Banana: It’s best to use a frozen banana to create a super thick & creamy texture while adding natural sweetness.
- Organic Goji Berries: These add a pop of color, texture, & extra nutrients to boost the blend.
How to Make
- Blend the Liquids & Powders. First, add the liquids, seeds, peanut butter, Brazil nuts, cacao powder, vanilla plant protein, superfoods, & sea salt to a high-speed blender. Blend these ingredients until smooth.
- Blend the Frozen Banana. Next, add in the frozen banana. Blend until smooth & creamy. If needed, you can pause the blender, remove the lid, & scrape down the sides so that everything is fully incorporated. You may need to add a little more liquid depending on how thick/thin you like your smoothies.
- Blend the Goji Berries. Lastly, add the goji berries & blend on medium for about 20 seconds to mix them in while keeping some texture.
- Serve. Pour into a chilled glass & enjoy!

Optional Smoothie Add-Ins
Make this Butterfinger Superfood Protein Smoothie your own! Here are some ways to boost the nutrition:
- Organic Hemp Seeds: Add in a tablespoon of organic hemp seeds for a boost of healthy fats, protein, omegas, & minerals.
- Organic Coconut Yogurt: Enhance the creaminess with a scoop of organic plain coconut yogurt.
- Organic Greens: Greens are packed with so many minerals, vitamins, & antioxidants. I recommend baby spinach if you’re new to green smoothies, but kale, Swiss chard, mustard greens, collard greens, or mixed greens all work.
Tips for Making the Perfect Smoothie
Want to make the best Butterfinger Superfood Protein Smoothie? As someone who blends smoothies daily, here are my top tips for nailing it every time:
- Use a Frozen Banana: The ice & creaminess of a frozen banana adds thickness & chill without watering down the flavor.
- Adjust Liquid Amount: If your smoothie is too thick to blend, don’t worry! Just add a bit more liquid, open the lid, scrape down the sides if needed, & blend again. When possible, always use a larger high-speed blender instead, as it will blend the ingredients much better.
- How to Make: Blend your liquid first & powders first, before adding the frozen banana. This trick helps the powders fully dissolve & avoids clumps. It’s my go-to method!
- Smoothie Blending Tip: Start your blender on low to medium speed. Going straight to high can make it challenging for your blender to properly blend the ingredients smoothly. Thus, gradually increase the speed.
- Blend Goji Berries Last: Adding goji berries at the end keeps them from getting fully blended & creamy. This way, they hold onto their texture, giving your smoothie that signature Butterfinger crunch!
- Chill Your Glass: Want a milkshake-like experience?! Put your serving glass in the freezer while you’re making your blend to ensure a chilled smoothie at every sip.
Smoothie FAQs
Do I have to use a frozen banana?
The frozen banana gives this smoothie its thick, creamy texture. If you’re using a fresh banana instead, toss in a handful of ice cubes to keep it cold. If you want to skip the banana altogether—whether due to allergies or preference—you can swap in ½ cup of frozen organic zucchini, organic cauliflower, organic coconut meat, or organic avocado chunks. For a banana-free version, I suggest adding 1 organic pitted Medjool date or 2 teaspoons of honey to keep the sweetness balanced.
Is it healthy to have a smoothie?
Absolutely, if it’s made right! I wouldn’t post something that was unhealthy. Having a smoothie full of protein, healthy fats, & superfoods for a post-workout breakfast is great because you’ll be getting essential vitamins, nutrients, & protein first thing. However, some smoothies on the market or on the web can be loaded with tons of fruit, added sugar & nonsense, making them a less healthy option.
What is the best protein powder to use?
I used an organic vanilla plant protein powder for this healthy candy bar smoothie—it adds creaminess, a hit of vanilla, & a boost of protein.
How can I add protein without using protein powder?
If you don’t have vanilla protein powder on hand, no worries! To increase the protein content, you can add a tablespoon of organic hemp seeds without changing the taste too much.
Do I have to add superfoods?
Even though this is a superfood smoothie recipe, you are not required to add them. However, I do recommend looking into them, as there are incredible benefits to consuming them regularly. And if you only have a couple of superfood powders, that’s great! Use what you’ve got!
