This Butterfinger Smoothie recipe includes wholesome ingredients to transpire the flavor combination found in the authentic candy bar. Featuring rich cacao plant powder, creamy peanut butter, raw Brazil nuts, and vibrant goji berries, to mimic that classic nut bar crunch. A nutritious chocolate protein smoothie recipe that tastes like liquid butterfinger.

With Halloween approaching in a couple weeks, I just had to make a candy bar smoothie recipe. This is the first of the few that will be posted in the weeks to come, but we’re starting off strong with a crunchy, chocolate peanut butter classic. A protein-packed Butterfinger Smoothie recipe.
I have to admit, I have not had a butterfinger candy bar in years. The reason being is that the ingredients are not the best. Which resulted in me creating a healthier & more nutritious candy bar smoothie recipe. Now don’t be fooled, because this smoothie tastes like the real deal – but in a liquid form. And I know this goes without saying, but there were no butterfinger candy bars harmed in making this smoothie recipe, for healths sake.
It’s perfectly rich, creamy, & overall tastes incredible. The frozen banana, along with the medjool date adds some sweetness. The creamy peanut butter and cacao protein creates that dessert-like milkshake. The handful of goji berries adds a nice texture to the smoothie that imitates the crunch in a butterfinger candy bar. A superb combination that cannot be beat.
So whether you’re having it as a spooky season sweet or a post workout treat, you’ll love this candy bar smoothie recipe.

Ingredients
- Organic Unsweetened Oat Milk: Any organic unsweetened milk works for this recipe, but oat milk makes this smoothie extra creamy. So if you’ve got it, use it! Just be sure to use trusted brands – I like MALK Organics.
- Organic Cacao Plant Protein: Adding a scoop of chocolate protein powder makes this Brazil nut smoothie chocolatey, while keeping full and satisfied longer. I love Four Sigmatic’s Creamy Cacao Plant Protein for this recipe. It’s made with real unrefined cacao with no grains, gums or fillers. Oh & it’s super delicious. Nevertheless, if you have yet to try Four Sigmatic’s Creamy Cacao Plant Protein, add your favorite chocolate plant protein.
- Organic Unsalted Peanut Butter: It wouldn’t be a butterfinger smoothie without it. I used creamy organic peanut butter, but crunchy would also be phenomenal in my opinion!
- Organic Raw Brazil Nuts: Brazil nuts are loaded with fiber, protein, thiamine, copper, magnesium, and are considered to be the number one food source for selenium.
- Organic Ground Flax Seeds: Organic ground flax seeds adds a great little boost of fiber & minerals to this chocolate peanut butter smoothie.
- Sea Salt: A healthy pinch of sea salt is rich in a ton of minerals and beautifully enhances the flavor of this protein smoothie.
- Organic Medjool Date: Adding a date to this chocolate protein smoothie recipe adds the perfect amount of caramel-like sweetness to it. I recommend buying pitted dates, that way you don’t have to remove the pits yourself. Oh, & my favorite brand of dates is Joolie’s!
- Organic Frozen Banana: To create that ultra thick & creamy texture that we all love in a smoothie, we’ll be adding in a frozen banana.
- Ice Cubes: Completely optional, just in case you need to make your candy bar smoothie colder.
- Organic Goji Berries: This superfood adds color, texture, & is packed with nutrients, to amplify this smoothie.
How To Make
- Blend the Liquids & Powders. First, add the non-dairy milk, plant protein, peanut butter, Brazil nuts, seeds, and sea salt, to a high-speed blender. Blend these ingredients until smooth.
- Blend the Medjool Date. Add the soft medjool date to the blender and blend until smooth.
- Blend the Frozen Ingredients.. Next, add in the frozen banana and ice cubes. Blend until smooth and creamy. You may need to add a little more non-dairy milk depending on how thick/thin you like your smoothies
- Blend the Goji Berries. Add the goji berries. Blend for 20 seconds on medium.
- Serve. Pour into a chilled glass and enjoy immediately.
Optional Smoothie Add-Ins
Feel free to truly make this smoothie your own! Here are a few suggestions to amp-up this recipe:
- Organic Chia Seeds: Add a scoop of organic chia seeds for some omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, selenium, phosphorus, calcium, etc.
- Organic Hemp Seeds: Add a tablespoon of organic hemp seeds to boost the healthy fats, protein, omegas & minerals in this chocolate smoothie.
- Organic Cacao Nibs: Wanting a little more crunch to your chocolate peanut butter smoothie? Add anywhere between 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon of organic cacao nibs. Simply incorporate the organic cacao nibs when adding the goji berries to your chocolate protein smoothie.
- Organic Coconut Yogurt: Add some creaminess to this smoothie with a scoop of coconut yogurt. You may have to reduce the liquid to ½ cup in this smoothie when adding yogurt.
- Organic Cold Brew: Need a boost? Use half organic oat milk & half cold brew, to turn this into a mocha butterfinger smoothie. YUM!
- Organic Greens: You can get your greens in too in this chocolate peanut butter smoothie. They blend easily & you can’t taste them. Plus, greens are packed with so many minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants. Spinach, kale, swiss chard, mustard greens, collard greens, or mixed greens all work. WARNING: it will change the color of the smoothie
Tips for Making the Perfect Smoothie
Interested in how to make the absolute perfect chocolate protein smoothie recipe? As someone who makes smoothies daily, here are my TOP tips for creating the perfect smoothies:
- Use Frozen Fruit: Adding a frozen to this smoothie is the only way to go! The ice from the frozen fruits adds thickness to the smoothie.
- Soak Medjool Date: If your dates aren’t soft, you will need to soak your pitted dates in very warm water for 5 minutes. This will help them soften up, so that they can blend nicely.
- Adjust Liquid Amount: If you find that your smoothie is too thick to blend, not to worry! Just add a bit more milk, blend, open the cover, scrape down the sides if needed, and blend again. And when possible, always use a larger high-speed blender instead, as it will blend the ingredients much better.
- How To Make: Add your liquid first & blend your powders first, then the medjool date, before adding your frozen ingredients. This is my personal favorite way of preparing my smoothies. By blending the liquid & powders first, it ensures that your powders blend completely.
- Smoothie Blending Tip: Start your blender on low to medium speed. If you blend the smoothie too quickly from the beginning, it’s really hard for the blender to properly blend the frozen ingredients – so start lower and then gradually increase the speed.
- Blend Goji Berries Last: The reason for adding the goji berries last, is because you don’t want them to get as creamy like the smoothie – you want them to retain their structure and texture. That makes this smoothie a bit crunchy, which I love!
- Chill Your Glass: There’s nothing better than a cold smoothie, in this case, a butterfinger milkshake. Put your serving glass in the fridge or freezer while you’re making your smoothie to ensure a chilled smoothie with every sip.
Smoothie FAQ’s
Do I have to use a frozen banana?
The frozen banana in this recipe gives the smoothie a thick & creamy texture. If using a fresh banana, be to add a handful of ice cubes to achieve a cold, thick smoothie. However, if you’re looking to remove the banana altogether, because you’re allergic or simply don’t like them, you can replace it with ½ cup of frozen zucchini, frozen cauliflower, or frozen avocado chunks. If you elect to make this a banana free smoothie, I recommend keeping the organic medjool date to maintain its sweetness.
Is it healthy to have a smoothie?
Duh! I wouldn’t post something that was unhealthy. Having a smoothie full of protein, healthy fats, & superfoods for a post workout breakfast is great because you’ll be getting essential vitamins, nutrients, & protein, first thing. However, some smoothies on the market or on the web can be loaded with tons of fruit, added sugar, & nonsense, making them a less healthy option.
What is the best protein powder to use?
For this particular chocolate protein smoothie recipe, I love using Four Sigmatic’s Cacao Plant Protein. It’s made with real organic ingredients with no grains, gums, or fillers. When selecting a plant protein, it’s crucial to look at the protein content and most importantly, the ingredients.
How can I add protein without using protein powder?
If you don’t have cacao protein powder on hand, you can substitute 4 teaspoons of cacao powder. To increase the protein content, you can add a tablespoon of organic chia seeds and/or organic hemp seeds, without changing the taste too much.
Can I make this protein smoothie recipe in advance?
Yes! Feel free to make the smoothie as is or double it for later. Check out this “How to Prepare Smoothies in Advance” post to achieve the best results.
