The Best Smoothie Add-Ins guide to help you blend things right! Not only is this post packed with knowledge about how to create the ultimate smoothie, but it also features 10 healthy protein smoothie recipes!

To say that I am obsessed with smoothies is an understatement. I literally have a smoothie every single day & I have no shame in admitting that.
What I love about smoothies, is that you can combine several healthy ingredients & it turns out phenomenal…most of the time.
With that, I felt obligated to share a guide to my favorite smoothie add-ins.
So grab your blenders ready & let’s begin.
Smoothie Add-Ins
1. Organic Frozen Fruit
Adding frozen fruit to smoothies is the only way to go! The ice from the frozen fruits adds thickness to the smoothie. I like to use between ½ – 1 frozen banana to provide my smoothie with a thick, creamy, & milkshake like texture. If using a fresh banana, be to add a handful of ice cubes to achieve a cold, thick smoothie. However, if you’re looking to remove the banana altogether, because you’re allergic or simply don’t like them, you can replace it with ½ cup of frozen zucchini, frozen cauliflower, or frozen avocado chunks. If you elect to make a banana-free smoothie, I recommend adding an organic medjool date to maintain the smoothie sweetness.
2. Organic Plant Protein
Vanilla, cacao, or plain! I love adding a scoop of organic plant protein to reach my protein intake & I always purchase plant protein that are made with real organic ingredients with no grains, gums, or fillers. When selecting a plant protein, it’s crucial to look at the protein content and most importantly, the ingredients.
If you don’t have protein powder on hand, to increase the protein content, you add a tablespoon of organic chia seeds, organic ground flax seeds, and/or organic hemp seeds, without changing the taste too much.
3. Organic Nut or Seed Butter
Some may be scared of nut or seed butters because of its high caloric content, but there shouldn’t be anything to be afraid of – except for the many brands that add harmful ingredients like cane sugar, vegetable oil, and trans fats. My biggest suggestion is to buy an organic & raw nut or seeds butters made with 1 ingredient of the nut or seed itself.
My favorites are organic raw almond butter, organic unsalted peanut butter, organic raw cashew butter, organic sunflower seed butter, & the list goes on & on. Adding organic nut or seed butters not only up the protein + healthy fats of your smoothie, but they also make them super creamy.
4. Organic Nuts & Seeds
If you don’t have the nut or seed version, the actual nut or seed itself will blend right up along with your other smootthie ingredients.
My favorites are organic raw almonds, organic unsalted peanuts, organic raw cashews, organic raw walnuts, organic raw pecans, organic sunflower seeds, organic chia seeds, organic ground flax seeds, organic hemp seeds, & the list goes on & on.
5. Organic Superfoods
A superfood is a food that is nutrient-dense. AKA has a high ratio of nutrients overall calories. Superfoods include specific fruits, vegetables, nuts, sees, & herbs. These nutrient-rich foods are considered to be optimal for health & well-being. For additional superfood information, be sure to check out this superfood post!
6. Organic Cacao Nibs
Although organic cacao nibs are technically a superfood, they deserve their own heading in this smoothie guide. Adding cacao nibs to my smoothie is my latest smoothie obsession. Simply add a tablespoon of cacao nibs at the last minute to your smoothie, then blend once more. The reason for adding the cacao nibs last, is because you don’t want them to get as creamy like the smoothie – you want them to retain their structure, for texture. That makes this smoothie a bit crunchy, which I love!
7. Organic Spices
While smoothies are traditionally enjoyed during the warmer months, I enjoy them just as much during the winter season. When I do, I love incorporating organic ceylon cinnamon or organic pumpkin spice, as they really warm up the flavors. However, you can certainly add it in even regardless of the temperature outside. I like to use between ¼ – ½ tsp, as too much can ruin the smoothie.
No matter if I’m adding a spice or not, I always do a healthy pinch of celtic sea salt, as it’s rich in a ton of minerals and beautifully enhances the flavor of smoothies.
8. Organic Liquids
You can technically use anything to get things blended. I prefer my smoothies on thicker side, so they have a milkshake consistency. Thus, I use between ¾ – 1 cup of liquid of choice. A general rule is to start with the minimum and add more only if needed. You can always add more, but once you add too much, you can’t go back! Also, pausing between blending to scrape down sides helps. And when possible, always use a larger high-speed blender instead, as it will blend the ingredients much better.
My favorite smoothie liquids include organic unsweetened non dairy milk from MALK Organics or Three Trees, organic coconut water from Harmless Harvest, organic full-fat unsweetened coconut milk from Native Forest, or organic coffee from Four Sigmatic!
